About Silvassa Municipal Council (SMC)

Silvassa Municipal Council is an autonomous body established on 18th February 2006. It is under the control of the director of municipal administration; the term of the office of municipality is for a period of 5 years. The President and Vice President of the Council are elected from the councillors. The term of the office of the President and Vice presidential co-terminus with the terms of Council. The main duties of the President are to preside at all the meetings of the Council and regulate and conduct the work at such meetings and also to watch over the financial and executive administration of the Council.

Two Types Of Municipal Functions

Construction, Repairs and maintenance of all public road in the Municipal area.

The lighting of public road and places.

To look after the health and sanitation needs of the people.

To maintain the burial and cremation grounds.

To supply water.

To maintain the public latrines etc.

Establishing or maintaining of Pre-Primary and Secondary Education.

Maintenance of parts, and other recreation.

Establishing or maintaining a public Hospital.

Establishing or maintaining homes for disabling or destitute person.

Establishing or maintaining public building like Town halls, Municipal Offices, Shops, Municipal Market, Theatre, etc.

Roles and Responsibilities:

To preside over all the meetings of the council & regulate the conduct of business at such meetings. Watch over the financial and executive administration of the council. Exercise supervision and control over the act and proceedings of the council in matter of executive administration and in matters concerning the accounts and records of council. In cases of emergency direct the execution or stoppage of any work or the doing of any act which requires the sanction of council.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Supervise the financial and executive administration of the council. To take step to give effect to all the decisions of the resolution of council / standing committee. To maintain and supervise the accounts and register of the council. Prepare budget estimates and submit to standing committee. Report to president and the committee concern in matters related to the Council. Exercise supervision and control over the acts and proceedings of all the officers and servants of the council.

On April 17, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new medical college in Silvassa, aiming to enhance healthcare education and services in the region. The event was marked by a 16-kilometer-long roadshow in Daman, showcasing the government's commitment to development in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
